EU Diabetes Working Group (EUDWG)

The EU Diabetes Working Group (EUDWG) is a group of cross-party, cross-national MEPs with particular interest in diabetes. The group is co-chaired by three MEPs with significant political profiles. The co-chairs are strongly committed to the objectives of the EUDWG. They represent in the European Parliament the best interests of all people with diabetes in Europe and provide dedicated support and advice to the diabetes community in driving policy change.

Mission Statement
The principle aim of the EUDWG is to improve both prevention of diabetes, as well as the health and quality of life of European citizens living with diabetes, through European Union (EU) policy.

Specifically, by acting as a "hub" for the exchange of experience, information and data on diabetes between relevant stakeholders, the EUDWG serves to:

  • drive the development and implementation of a targeted EU diabetes strategy, in the form of an EU Council Recommendation on diabetes prevention, diagnosis, management, education and research

  • address specific EU and national policies which have a potential positive or negative impact on the lives of people with diabetes

Policy Objectives
As outlined in the policy paper: "EU Diabetes Working Group (2009-2014) Delivering for Diabetes in Europe?", the key policy objectives of the EUDWG are as follows:

  1. Public Health - gain recognition of diabetes as an EU public health priority and support cross-sectoral policies and legislation that promote awareness, prevention, diagnosis and management of the disease;

  2. Research - secure increased funding and better coordination in all fields of diabetes research;

  3. Consumer protection - ensure that consumers, including people with diabetes, have clear and easily understandable information on the content and nutritional value of the food they buy;

  4. Employment & social affairs - support EU policies and legislation that prevent discrimination of people with diabetes in all aspects of their life, including education, recreation and employment;

  5. Patient rights & safety - put patients, including those with diabetes, at the centre of EU healthcare policies and legislation and ensure that their rights and safety are protected.
